In 2 sentences, explain which line has the steepest slope by analyzing the equations of the lines below: line a- y=2x-4 Line b- y= 1/3x+2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Line a goes right 2 and up 1 Line b goes right 1 and up 3 Which is steeper?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A steeper slope has a higher gradient value.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so technically steep means like sorta increasing, correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then what does it mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a slope is steeper the farther it is from horizontal aka closer to vertical

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahh okay thank you( : so do I figure this out by drawing both equations on a graph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ya you can see it visually that way

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay give me a sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it's line a, is it correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@znimon ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it is line b because b is further from horizontal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you mean by further from horizontal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ya you can see it visually that way

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a slope is steeper the farther it is from horizontal aka closer to vertical

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Line a goes up 2 right 1 Line b goes up 1 right 3 Excuse me I am sorry somehow I wrote the slope down inverted you are correct line a has a steeper slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Silly mistake excuse me. No wounder you were confused.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Omg yay yay!!! Do you have any ideas on how to explain everything we just did in 2 sentences?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Line "a"'s change in y is greater than change in x and y differs from x by 1. While line "b"'s change is y is less than the change in x and y differs from x by -2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And I hope that makes sense because the less you go up and farther you go over the closer that line is to horizontal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and therefor less steep. And the same kind of argument the more you go up and less you go over the closer you get to vertical which is as steep as is possible. I hope that makes sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It makes somewhat sence I guess

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember vertical is the most steep so the closer you get to that the more steep a line is. Horizontal is the least steep o the closer you get to that the less steep the line

Thank you so much!!(:
