The two characters are from the short story "The Necklace."

Both women are friends but Madame Forestier is wealthier than Madame Loisel. Even though Forestier treats her friend Loisel with extreme kindness, Loisel is very jealous of her. When Loisel is in need, Forestier is always willing to help. 

Loisel does have some shame though. When she loses her friend's necklace, Loisel lives a life of poverty in order to pay it back.
