OpenStudy (katherinesmith):

The red graph (1) is the graph of f(x) = log(x). Describe the transformation of the blue function (2) and write the equation of the graph.

OpenStudy (katherinesmith):

OpenStudy (katherinesmith):

up and to the right

OpenStudy (phi):

and the numbers ?

OpenStudy (katherinesmith):

up 4 right 5?

OpenStudy (phi):

try this: color in the first block the red curve goes through. do the same for the blue curve. now count up and then count to the right from red's colored block to the blue's colored block.

OpenStudy (katherinesmith):

up 4 right 4?

OpenStudy (phi):

no

OpenStudy (katherinesmith):

oh my god

OpenStudy (katherinesmith):

i did it again and still got 4 and 4.

OpenStudy (phi):

It is 5 up and 5 over

OpenStudy (katherinesmith):

for some reason i completely ignored that block and started counting from the first positive block on the grid. my mistake. #dumb

OpenStudy (katherinesmith):

so would that be f(x) = -log (5) + 5 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

it should work as long as you go from the "same" red block to the "same" blue block. but matching up the curves can be tricky except at special spots (like the beginning)

OpenStudy (phi):

you seemed to have punted on using the rules: to shift right n units replace x with x-n to shift up n units add +n to f(x)

OpenStudy (katherinesmith):

f(x) = log(x - 5) + 5 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

as a check, blue goes through (6,5) log(6-5)+5 = log(1)+5 = 0 + 5 = 5 which matches.

OpenStudy (katherinesmith):

thank you so much for your help. now i have a totally different assignment to be stuck on.
