Consider the following system of equations: 1. X+Y-Z=1 2. 2X-5Y+Z=-1 3.7X-7Y-Z=k Determine the value(s) of k for which the solution to this system is line.

how will i know if the intersection of planes is a plane, a line, a point or no intersection using system of equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure I understand your question. What exactly are you trying to find?

OpenStudy (loser66):

are you in linear algebra or calculus3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

vectors.. I understand that part.. but how will i know if the intersection of planes is a plane, a line, a point or no intersection using ONLY system of equations without solving it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Loser66

OpenStudy (loser66):

make up augmented matrix, and rref it, if its rank is 1--> intersect at a point rank is 2 intersect at a line, rank is 3 intersect at a plane.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm not doing matrix..

OpenStudy (loser66):

OH man!!! so I am sorry. I don't know how to solve without using matrix

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok......
