Assalamualaikum, sometimes the closest and most humble a person can be is when they don't have many things, to become absorbed with 24/7 and forget God almighty, to distract them and when they feel their lowest; They just KNOW there is a higher power (God) and put their most energy into remembering and praying and begging god to give them what they want. But, look at it this way. God does what's best for a person and if the only time you'll be god-fearing and showing your rememberance to him, is when your sick or poor, then god will keep you that way so in the end all your praying and worshipping rememberance grants you Jannah (Paradise). What would you pick, having a fancy job and being self absorbe and working your way to Hellfire, or being a rightous poor person in-turn making a pathway to heaven, for youself.
