WELCOME TO OPEN STUDY!! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anyway, can you help me out? [SERIES] given a2 = 4, S3 = 17; find common ration and a1

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

Yes that's why I am here! :D This is a geometric progression I suppose right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah :)

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

A1 + a2 + a3 = 17 right? a2 = 4 a1 + a3 = 13 a + ar^2 = 13 Getting this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah..

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

Solve the Quadratic equation you get after that! ar = a2 = 4 so a = 4/r Get a quadratic equation and then solve

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm... i think i already did this kind of solution a couple of hours ago, and my and answer didn't seem to be right as i've checked on the calculator XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so did you get r = 13 +/- sqrt(105) all over 8? :D

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

I hate agreeing to it but YES I DID@!! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OM... XD

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

:') :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i've done trial and error, and this is what i've got r= 1/4 and a1 = 12. pretty convincing cuz it actually worked XD. too bad i need the solution to merit a point... well, thanks! :)
