The Independent variable is the variable that causes the Dependent variable to change.

You've done science experiments in class, right?

In a science experiment,
the INDEPENDENT variable is the one that we change.

After we change the Independent variable,
we pay attention to how the DEPENDENT variable changes, all on its own.
