What Is The Difference Between An Open Equation And A Closed Equation?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

something like 2 = 2 is always true so that's a closed equation or closed sentence because it's truth value is always definitive and it never changes

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

something like 2 = 3 is always false this is also a closed equation or closed sentence (for the same reason as above)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

however, something like x+2 = 4 is an open equation because the truth value depends on what the value of x is so when you ask yourself "what's the truth value of that statement?" and the answer is "it depends", then it's going to be an open statement or equation

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You can think of it like this: Open means it's open to possibilities and different scenarios (and there's wiggle room). Closed means that it's closed tight and set in stone. The answer is definitive and it will never change.
