I'm confused about your question, what exactly are we checking?
Remember the equal sign (=) means that things are the same.
So if I write 34 = 6, that is a lie because 34 is obviously not the same as the 6
if I write 3 = 2+1, this makes sense because 2+1 is the same as 3
