How did gas warfare change the face of combat during World War I? Soldiers had to wear special masks to protect themselves. It replaced the use of air raids and machine guns in battle. It led to mass military desertions on the battlefields. Chemicals such as mustard gas replaced trench warfare. @texaschic101

Only civilians wore masks.

There weren't any civilians to speak of... They were all either killed, taken as P.O.W or they moved where the war wasn't... The infantry had to wear the masks because they were the ones using the gases... If you weren't given a mask or if you hadn't stolen one from a dead soldier already, then you died...
