Gerald needs to purchase baseballs and bats for his youth baseball league. He'll need at least 25 pieces of equipment, but he only has $615 to spend. Baseballs cost $20 each and bats cost $35 each. If Gerald wants to purchase the most amount of equipment and still stay within his budget, which combination of baseballs and bats is optimal? a. (22, 3) b. (22, 5) c. (24, 1) d. (29, 1)

well...by subbing in (29,1) it is staying within the budget and getting 30 pieces of equipment, which is the most amount of the equipment. What do you think ?

idk i dont know how to do most the problems i put up. i dont want the answer i want to know the process and how to get the ans you know?

@dumbcow

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

well the graph you posted pretty much sums up what i would tell you .... also you want to maximize total equipment or (x+y) so just add up each combination and see which one gives highest total and is still under $615

im not getting it?

The graph you have shows that all 4 of your possible answers are valid. They are not in that yellow area of the graph, which means they are all possible combinations. Now visually, the best answers are going to be answers that are on the highest boundary lines. 2 of your answers are on lower boundary lines and 2 are on the higher boundary lines. This means that right away we want to throw those two answers out, theyre not maximizing anything. So we're left with B or D. Now as said before, the graph shows that neither B or D go into that yellow danger zone. Both are possible combinations. This means that D is the best choice because it gives you the most equipment. And just to confirm that this is a valid choice, we can check our math. 29 baseballs * 20 dollars = 580 1 bat * 35 dollars = 35 580 + 35 = 615. So this confirms D as our best choice.

ok now that makes more sense! thank you so much!
