What was a major consequence of the decline and fall of the Roman Empire?
One of the worst was the loss of knowledge and culture. Under the empire, education was an institution, but when the Western Empire collapsed to barbarian invasions, most of those that took over weren't so much concerned with reading and writing but with conquest and power. Literacy fell, cultural advances fell back, architectural growth stagnated or retreated completely. Many smaller nations and kings took the place of what was once one unified state under which all of these advances were available. Now everyone was competing for what was left and too busy killing each other to bother with petty things like teaching reading and writing. Even though education was still something only privileged citizens could enjoy, when the empire collapsed, that system had also fallen apart.
