How do you think Pope Urban II and the Crusades influenced the trade routes shown on this map?

One of the things that happened was that Europe suddenly developed a taste for the exotic things found only in the Middle East. You can see on the map that Venice traded with cities such as Antioch and Tyre and throughout the eastern Med which were opened up by the Crusades. Even though the pope forbade trade in things that could be used for war at the time -- such as timber which could be used to build enemy ships -- merchants could trade in "luxury" goods like silks and spices which were in high demand and which also made Italy's trading cities very, very wealthy.
