Sand And Sugar Sand and sugar is an example of heterogeneous mixture as the grains in it are easily distinguishable under a magnifying glass. You can separate the sugar grains and the sand grains in it by washing the sugar out with water.1st Reference: http://lifestyle.iloveindia.com/lounge/examples-of-heterogeneous-mixtures-13995.html 2nd Reference: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_sand_and_sugar_a_homogeneous_mixture 3rd Reference: http://www.brighthubeducation.com/science-homework-help/111418-examples-of-homogeneous-and-heterogeneous-mixtures/ In chemistry mixtures are homogeneous if they have the same proportions throughout a given sample or multiple samples of different proportions to create a consistent mixture. So if the sand and sugar are mixed well they will be homogeneous with regards to consistent mixture. I hope this explains why they are regarded the way they are. :)
