Square root both sides
(x-9) = sqrt 1
x-9 = +-1
x - 9 = +1 [x=10]
x-9 = -1 [And you get another value of x]

use the identity  (a-b)^2  =  a^2  + b^2 - 2ab to simplify LHS

subtract 1 from both sides

factorize the polynomial

equate each factor to 0 to obtain the result.
