factor 3a^2-27a-210

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Hi! Do you just want the answer, or do you want me to help you go through it and explain?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i factored out the 3 to begin with and 3(a^2-9a-70) but I can't figure out what's next.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Okay. So since it's -70 we want to find factors of 70 that have a difference of 9. Does that make sense now?

OpenStudy (oaktree):

@lgh875? Do you get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes and I can't figure out what two multiply to get -70 and add to get -9.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Not add. Subtract.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

even subtract. I have 1,70-2,35-5,12-7,10. That's all the factors of 70 i see.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Not 5 and 12. That makes 60.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, now i see! I keep making these stupid little mistakes that are going to cost me!! Thank you for your help! 3(a+5)(a-14)

OpenStudy (oaktree):

No problem! Glad to help. And don't be down on yourself for those things - it happens to everyone.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks again! I'm sure I will be back on here!

OpenStudy (oaktree):

We'll be glad to see you back.
