If he had written I was like a red balloon, then the figure of speech would be Simile Personification= doesn't not fit the context, it is the giving of human traits to inanimate or non-living objects. He doesn't say anything about the balloon's emotions or physical gestures. Onomatopoeia= it's not a figure of speech but word that phonetically imitates or suggests the source of the sound that it describes So Metaphor remains which is the right choice.
