what happens to the water level when an ice cube is placed on the surface of water?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

9/10 of a floating ice cube is submerged. So the floating ice cube displaces 9/10 of its volume in water, causing the water level to rise.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what happens when it is melting?

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

Start by comparing mass of ice cube and mass of displaced water.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah..i started like that but i dont know how to relate it with the water level rise/fall...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

water level rises when ice melts, because the ice which is melted adds to the water level and hence water level increases.

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):
