Which set of data has 3 modes? A.33, 34, 31, 34, 39, 35, 37, 31, 39, 30......B.31, 34, 31, 34, 39, 35, 37, 31, 34, 35 ......C.32, 35, 31, 36, 41, 40, 37, 30, 42, 29 ......D.32, 35, 36, 35, 32, 36, 32, 36, 35, 32 plz help

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Let's make the data a bit easier to look at, first.... A.33, 34, 31, 34, 39, 35, 37, 31, 39, 30...... B.31, 34, 31, 34, 39, 35, 37, 31, 34, 35 ...... C.32, 35, 31, 36, 41, 40, 37, 30, 42, 29 ...... D.32, 35, 36, 35, 32, 36, 32, 36, 35, 32 Now, the mode is the value (or values) in the data that occur with the highest frequency, but MORE than once. So which set do you think has 3 modes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think d

OpenStudy (debbieg):

What are they, and how many times do they occur?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(32) 4 times

OpenStudy (debbieg):

If it has THREE modes, it must have THREE different values that occur the "most" number of times. Whatever value appears the most times, there must be 2 others that occur that same number of times. In D, 32 is the mode, but NO other value appears 4 times, so that one is "unimodal" - meaning that it has only ONE mode. So that's not it.

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Remember what you are looking for: a set where there are 3 different values that all occur the MOST number of times. They are all "tied for first place" in the race of "what value appears the most". This can be easier to see if you order the data from least to greatest (although not absolutely necessary to do so).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i did it and the one a came up with is b 31 comes up 3 time and 34 comes up 3 times...

OpenStudy (debbieg):

So if TWO values appear the MOST number of times, then how many modes does that data set have??

OpenStudy (debbieg):

You are looking for THREE modes. There must be THREE values that appear the MOST number of times.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so it is d becouse 32 comes up 4 times a 35 comes up 3 times and 36 comes up 3 time so i think it is D...

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Look, if there is ONE value that occurs the MOST times, then THAT is the ONLY mode. So d has ONE mode (32). You need THREE values that occur the SAME number of times. Let's look at one set at time:

OpenStudy (debbieg):

A.33, 34, 31, 34, 39, 35, 37, 31, 39, 30...... Now the mode MUST occur more than once. Let's see what values occur more than one time: 34, 34 39, 39 31, 31 All other values: 33, 35, 37, 30, only once each. So the most number of times ANY value occurs is twice, and there are THREE values that occur that many times.

OpenStudy (debbieg):

There CANT be multiple modes if they don't occur the SAME number of times. Then only the one(s) that occur the MOST will be the mode.

ok thx i think have it now.
