The problem is asking you to find the total black socks out of 36. They already give you the number of number of red socks. However, to find the answer, you don't need the red socks, so just subtract them from the total. 36-11=25 All you have now are 25 brown and black socks. Let's have x represent the brown socks. There are four times as many black socks as brown--4x Black socks(4x) + brown socks(x) = 25 5x=25 x=5 Now you know how many brown socks there are. There are four times as many black socks. What's 5x4=?
