confront head-on and conquer Lee's army, and capture Richmond in the process. "I propose to fight it out on this line if it takes all summer." In all fairness, Grant did it because that was what was expected of him (politically), not because he didn't see a bloodbath coming or because he couldn't conceive any other military options.
