It sounds like "sublimation." "Sublimation" is where we behave in socially-acceptable ways, in order to help us deal with our feelings and impulses. Let's say that I'm really angry at someone. I could get a gun and put a bullet in this person's head. But that wouldn't be very socially acceptable, would it? So, instead, I choose to swallow my anger, and read some magazines to distract myself. THAT would be much more socially acceptable. That is "sublimation."
