Thomas Jefferson
1 Thomas Jefferson was the third American President. He was born in 1743. His father was Peter and his mother was Jane. They were from Virginia. Thomas went to school at home and learned to read and write. Then he started going to college. After he graduated, he was a lawyer. Thomas married Martha in 1772. They built their home. It was called Monticello. Thomas and Martha had sons and daughters, but some of the children died. Martha died in 1782.
2 Thomas wrote the U.S. Declaration of Independence in 1776. Then the U.S. had a war to fight for freedom from England. The U.S. won the war. Thomas got a job in France working for the U.S. government. Then he came home. He was President from 1800 to 1808. After he retired, he went home to Monticello. He died there on July 4, 1826.
