IIT is or more precisely said that IITs are the top engineering colleges in India
known as the Indian Istitute of Technology they are highly reputed and you'll get a very good job if you are an IIT graduate
more over, there are many other colleges in India apart fromf the IITs
some of these are BITS - Birla Institute Of Technology and Science
it has three to four campus and the people say that the best one is the Pilani campus
and the others are at Hyderabad, Goa and one at Dubai.
other than these there are NITs that are known as National Institute of Technology
there are NIITs the National Institute of Information technology
and many more...

As already described IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) are highly reputed government engineering colleges. Under the new pattern around 1.3 million students compete for 4800 seats (in open category). @thisSucks - I guess you can understand very well why students start preparing so early.
