What make a glass different from a solid such as quartz? Under what conditions could quartz be converted into glass?

quartz is pure silicon dioxide (and in turn is a perfect crystal), while glass contains contaminants (such as other metal ions) which disrupt the crystal structure, and hence is amorphous.
