The straight line l is perpendicular to the line y+3x = 5 and passes through the point P(4, 2). Find the x-intercept of l.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first find the slope of a line perpendicular to a slope of 3. do you know how to do that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its actually -1/3. a perpendicular line has a slope of the negative reciprocal of the original slope.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then put it into y = mx + b form where m is you new slope and y and x are the point its crossing and you can solve for b and have a whole line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got it thanks

your welcome :)
