What is a heterogeneous mixture? Is soil or salt water a heterogeneous mixture?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

hetero means many homo means one or the same the term heterogeneous mixture pertains to mixtures that are distinguishable by the naked eye that there are more than one thing in the mix like marbles and sand or water and nails the term homogeneous mixture pertains to mixtures that cannot be distinguished by the naked eyes that there are more than one mixture like salt and water. when the salt completely dissolves into the water, we have no way of telling by means of the eyes if there are salt in the water. another example is the different gasses in the air or in the room. we learn in chemistry that there are different gasses like Nitrogen, Oxygen etc. but can we distinguish one from another with the naked eye? no. this is why air in the room or environment is a good example as well.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

heteregenous mixture is a mixture that consists of components in different phases such as mixture of a solid and a liquid or solid and gas and so on..............

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Heterogenous mixture is a multiphase mixture , Soil is a heterogenous mixture but Salt water is a homogenous mixture because salts are ionic compounds that are soluble in water...so they give it single look...
