- 0.6 miles each way, to and from school. -Year: 180 days -Sick 3 days a) How many meters are walked each year? b) If shoes last 5000 meters, how many pairs of shoes will you need per school year? * using a conversion factor

OpenStudy (shane_b):

First, you need to know the conversion factor needed to convert miles to meters. Google that and you'll see that 1 mile = 1609.34 meters. The question states you have to go 0.6 miles each way...so you need to double that since it's a round trip...and then multiply the result 1609.34 meters per mile. \[\large (2)(0.6\cancel{mi}) * \frac{1609.34m}{1\cancel{mi}}=1931.209m\]That will be the round trip distance in meters. Now you need to see how many days you're making the trip each year. The question states that there are 180 days in a school year and 3 of those days will be sick days. So you have the make the trip 177 times. Now just multiply the round-trip distance times 177 days to get the total distance traveled per school year. To do the second part, divide the answer you got above by 5000m and that's how many pairs of shoes you'll need to make all of those trips each year.
