how to factor 5x^2 +4x -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You could use the ac method, but to tell the truth, the inspection method will work just as well on this problem\[ 5x^2 +4x -1=(5x-1)(x+1)\]Note that the only way the leading term factors is 5x times x. So one of our factors has a 5x as the first term, and the other has an x. The constant term is negative one, which factors as -1 times 1. Fit those two in so the middle term is four, and you have it.

Keep practicing, make sure you look for the patterns, check your work. You'll get it.
