Help ME.. 8th Grade Work

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Read the paragraph. Then answer the question that follows. Perhaps you wanted pizza for dinner, but were out voted by the rest of the family who wanted chili. This is similar to what happens in a community. One person has to give up a right for the good of the group. Sometimes citizens' duties and rights conflict with each other. A good example is a public protest. People have the right to meet in groups and share ideas. However, a protest can disrupt traffic or other normal activities. A city must provide extra police protection to keep people safe. Therefore, the city has the right to require permission in advance for a protest. Government must make laws to balance the rights of individuals and different groups of people. What type of connection is used in the paragraph? Metaphor Comparison Category Analogy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it's a comparison but i'm really unsure

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

Let's try eliminating some of the answers first. What do you think about metaphor and catagory?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it's not metophor or catagory cause it doesn't have anything to do with those, so it's either comparison or analogy...... I think it's Comparison

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait it might be catagory..... I'm confused :/

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

No. You are correct in the ones that you eliminated. So now you have either comparison or analogy.

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

Give me just a minute to think of a couple of examples to show the difference.

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

This is tricky because comparison and analogy are fairly similar. The difference being that when you make a comparison you are usually finding similarities between to things that are already somewhat alike, or in the same category. Example: The red book is the same size as the blue book. Analogy is finding similarities in things that are completely different. Example: Baseball is like working your way up the company ladder. You start out at bat with an interview and if you hit the ball you get hired. If you are good and quick enough you will advance the bases until you reach home plate and upper management.

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

So are voting on what to eat in the same category as what the paragraph is really talking about (rights and liberties)? BRB gotta take my daughter to school real quick. Only be gone about 15 minutes

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

I hope that helped and made enough sense for you to answer your question. If not let me know and I'll see if I can explain it a little better. I was kind of in a hurry as you might have guessed. I misjudged the amount of time I had.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the answer is Analogy? @jagatuba

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

Yes. The writer using an analogy to make his/her point. Sorry it took so long to respond. I am usually only on OS on the weekends.
