This is my guess.
reduction division occurs to reduce the chromosomal no. When organisms sexually reproduce male & female gametes fuse which are haploid. Because of this the zygote becomes diploid. If reduction division did not occur the ofspring would have been tetraploid. And this would gradually increase.
