before we compare and contrast, lets try and understand the given functions a bit :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

1) Observe that the first function value \(f(x)\) is increasing as \(x\) is increasing

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

2) Observe that the second function \(g(x)\) is FALLING to the right, that is, dippind down as \(x\) is increasing

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

can you make out whether the remaining two functions are falling(decreasing) or rising(increasing) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay hold on one minute

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

take ur time :) see if u can figure out whether they're falling/rising. if u cant, its okay, il tell u anyways :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are they falling ? :(

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes third function is falling, cuz, it has a NEGATIVE slope

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

read the fourth function statement once,

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

it says, cameron is ADDING some stuff to his collection. That means, number of hats are increasing wid time, right ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yess

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

so, fourth function is increasing. we're DONE. lets put watever we observed so far, into one single paragraph.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you want me to do that ? :o Lol

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes :) give it a try if u can :) its tough i knw... but give a quick try if u can :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hah okay one moment

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Observe that the first function value f(x) is increasing as x is increasing and observe that the second function g(x) is falling to the right. The third function is falling because of its negative slope and the fourth function is increasing because it says Cameron is adding things to his collection.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that good or too short ? :(

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that looks okay, but its missing one thing that the q is stressing us to focus on : slope and y intercept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh :(

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

First function value f(x) is increasing as x is increasing. Also the slope of this first function is not fixed. its y-intercept is also not listed in the table as there is not value given when x=0. Second function g(x) is falling to the right. so it has a negative slope. from the graph, the line is cutting y-axis at -3, so its y intercept is -3. since it has fell 4 units when moving right by 1 unit, its slope must be -4. so its equation may look like \(g(x) = -4x-3\) The third function is falling because of its negative slope(-4), since c = 3, it cuts y axis at 3 which is the y intercept. Fourth function is increasing because it says Cameron is adding things to his collection. since he started wid 3 toys, y intercept is 3. since he adds 4 toys to his collection every year, slope = 4. so the equation for fourth function is \(j(x) = 4x+3\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do I add all of that into my answer ? :o

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

thats lotof information, see if some parts of it makes sense. ask if something doesnt make sense

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

my previous reply is the complete solution, i want u go thru it and digest if possible :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha that's fine . I think i've completed the question . Thank you so much for your help :))

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

oh you've already finished this q ok np :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):
