OpenStudy (nick1232):

Students of a biology class ran an experiment to find the optimal time period for a plant to produce flowers. The plants were given 20 ml of water every day and were placed by the window to get sunlight for 6 hours. What is the dependent variable of the experiment? a) Amount of sunlight b)amount of water c) number of days d)number of flowers

OpenStudy (aaronq):

the dependent variable is what you are looking for in the experiment

OpenStudy (nick1232):

I got B , im just checking my work

OpenStudy (aaronq):

they're looking for the amount of water?

OpenStudy (nick1232):

No they asked what is the dependent variable of the experiment

OpenStudy (aaronq):

i know, why do you think it's B?

OpenStudy (nick1232):

Because dependent variable means what doesnt change in the experiment

OpenStudy (aaronq):

no, thats not it. The dependent variable is dependent on the other variables (which you control, called independent variables). The dependent variable is that is being looked for in the experiment.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

think about it, which ones of these, can yo control? a) Amount of sunlight b)amount of water c) number of days d)number of flowers

OpenStudy (nick1232):

You cant control sunlight thats for sure ummm

OpenStudy (nick1232):

You can change the amount of water you put in

OpenStudy (nick1232):

you can change the days you want to do the expirement

OpenStudy (nick1232):

and you can put as many flowers as you want

OpenStudy (nick1232):

Kinda confused

OpenStudy (aaronq):

okay, you got water and days, right. they're independent variables. The amount of sunlight is actually an independent variable as well. because you're putting the plants near a window. You can always move them out of the sunlight, so you ARE able to control the amount of sunlight. The number of flowers is dependent on all these variables. you can't just put more flowers, thats not part of the experiment, you're testing for flower production, putting more flowers (without them growing by themselves defeats the purpose).

OpenStudy (nick1232):

ohhhhhhhh i get it now ! Basically i want to see the specific results that they are measuring or observing when collecting data, so in this they want to find the time period for a plant to produce flowers

OpenStudy (nick1232):

Answer is D

OpenStudy (nick1232):

Number of flowers

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yeah exactly. what you are looking for (observing/taking measurements of) is the dependent variable, because it depends on everything else.

OpenStudy (nick1232):

So the answer is D

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yes

OpenStudy (nick1232):

Thank you, i have a few more im about to post

OpenStudy (aaronq):

okay, i can probably only help you with 1 or 2 more, i have to go study, myself.
