Easy math question im stuck on. (x+40)= ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its really easy i know it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i forgot how to get the x. i feel stupid.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk if i should plug in the 2 for the x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the angle that its at is less then 90. if tht helps.

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Well, you'll want to find x. So we need to set up an equation involving x and solve it. Look at angle GED, the one on the "other side" of (x+40). Can you think of an expression for the measure of that angle? In terms of x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x is less then 90 degree angle

OpenStudy (debbieg):

|dw:1378827548894:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that diagrams kind of confusing me.. i thought it would be 2x+40= ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so youre saying ..180-x right?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Well, not 180 - x, but you're on the right track.... What is the sum of your angles GED + GEF?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 180

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im thinking x is 20 then.

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Right... so angle GED (the 3rd angle of the triangle) is what? 180-{measure of GEF} = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

180-x+40 like that?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

almost..... you are missing an important set of parentheses....

OpenStudy (debbieg):

You want to subtract the WHOLE expression x+40, from 180.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hello?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can anyone else help? i keep getting the wrong answer..

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Sorry, hold on.... this isn't working out. but to answer above, you need 180 - (x+40)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok? i did 180-(x+40) but keep getting an incorrect answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am i supposed to simplify?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Well, that isn't the answer yet. We are just trying to find x. Once you have x, you'll know what x+40 is, right? But the answer I'm getting isn't making sense, because the triangle isn't adding to 180... @skullpatrol ? @thomaster ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i tried that but i keep telling you. i get the wrong answer when i try to solve youre problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am getting the same answer and its completly wrong.. idk what to do here.

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Never mind, I see my own error... OK: 180-(x+40)=180-x-40=140 - x that's angle GED, right? (Make sure you see why!!) Now we have expressions for all 3 angles of the triangle, so those must sum to 180 (because, after all, it's a triangle!) So we have: x + 2x + (140 - x) = 180 That's the 3 angles of the triangle. Now you need to SOLVE THAT equation for x.

OpenStudy (debbieg):

But remember, x is not your answer to the question. This is just to tell you what x is. Once you know x, you know that GEF = x + 40 THAT'S what you need to select as your answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

20

OpenStudy (debbieg):

yes, for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ty

OpenStudy (debbieg):

So the angle measure you're looking for is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

60

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Right. :) and you're welcome :)
