Let's say you and a friend went to the mall together. You both bought items at several different stores. When the two of you got back to your house and started looking through your purchases, your friend came across some loose change at the bottom of one of the bags. You said it was yours. Your friend said it was hers. Before the argument got too heated, your friend said she had an idea for how to settle the problem.

Pennies and Nickels only

so I gather to settle the matter, you'd just split it in half
so, how many nickels and pennies each one gets?
we dunno how many nickels and pennies there are

we do know that pennies and nickels coins SUM = 20
we also know that the dollar amount of the pennies and nickels SUM = 48

so
p = pennies = 1c
n = nickels = 5c

p + n = 20
1p + 5n = 48

so, if you were to solve the 1st equation for say "p", what would it look like?
