Mrs. Perrin, the school music teacher, spent twice as much money on sheet music as she did on CDs. The total amount of money that she spent for sheet music and CDs was one third of her monthly music budget of $189. How much money did Mrs. Perrin spend on sheet music?

in this question you start at the end. 1/3 of ther monthly budget of 189 goes to sheet music and CD's. so 1/3 of 189. then of that number she spends twice as much on sheet music (call this x) as on CD's. so she spends x on sheet music and 1/2 x on CD's. then put everything together and get: x + 1/2 x = 1/3 * 189. solve for x
