A jumbo chocolate bar with a rectangular shape measures 12cm in length, 8cm in width, and 2cm in thickness. Due to escalating costs of cocoa, the management decided to reduce the volume by 10%. To accomplish this reduction, management decides that the new bar should have the same 2cm thickness, but the length and width if each should be reduced by an equal number of centimeters. What should be the dimensions of the new candy bar?
Calculate the volume with the given parameters; and find out what 10% less of that amount is.
Then set up a system of equations using the value that doesn't change (2cm) and set it equal to the new volume; then solve.
The volume is currently 192. 10% less is 172.8. I just can't get it to where the thickness stays the same while the other two are reduced equally.
still not getting it. :(
