they are rectangles right
for the horizontal rectangle length is (x-4) and breadth is 7
for the vertical one breadth is 4 and length is (x-7)
area of rectangle is given by length*breadth
to get area of shaded region add areas of both rectangles

So it would be 7(4) which equals 28 right? but then there's two x's so somewhere there would be a x^2?

Unless you add the 7 and 4. Then wouldn't it be 11x or something?
