Could someone please clarify how assignments and exams are assessed? How solutions have to be submitted? Is there any completion certificate (online or else)?

For a certificate you would want the MITx course through EDx. https://www.edx.org/ The down side is that it is only now and then, not all the time. Through this site and MITs you can self study at ANY time. Learn the material before the MIT class and you will have a much easier time getting their certificate. There are also many people here that help with programming. =) So the self study is not 100% on your own.

The HarvardX version of Intro to CompSci on edx begins in Jan 2014. https://www.edx.org/course/harvard-university/cs50x/introduction-computer-science/1022 You can register now and you are supposed to have a chance to earn a certificate.
