He LIKED that the local natives actually FED him because they were starving to death. AND the local natives WERE interested in employing TRADE with the Europeans, especially their king, Powhatan, to expand his growing Confederacy.
He DISLIKED the local natives because they were a hellava lot smarter than he ever imagined and that he was COMPLETELY dependent on them for his survival.The IDEA of violence back then was not what we think of today.Conquering and killing was a way of life then.
If John Smith THOUGHT he could have survived WITHOUT the local natives...he WOULD have killed them all IF he could have. Eye for an eye.
However, the local natives were in abundance, in a legitimate Confederation, excellent warriors, healthy as all get out, strong, well fed, well organized, extremely intelligent, and had a brilliant leader.
John Smith was completely at their mercy.
If it had been the reverse, John Smith would have killed them all.
