Which phase of matter has a fixed volume, but variable shape?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Liquid has a fixed volume but can take shape of the container

OpenStudy (anonymous):

people think the answer is Air but remember air can be compressed therby changing its volume nevertheless air can still take the shape of its container which is a variable shape.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that somewhat makes sense. But wouldnt it be like solid or gas

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u cant compress a liquid so it has a fixed volume, it can take the shape of a container which is a variable shape like the question asked..but as for a solid it has a fixed shape which cannot be compressed and the shape is also fixed not variable eg u cant compress a block of wood and if u put a block of wood in a bowl it doesnt take the shape of a bowl...hope u understand it now :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as for gas it can take any shape which means it is variable but remember under high pressure the volume of a gass decreases which mean it does not have a fixed volume as the volume of a gas fluctuates

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u understand it now??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thank you Franklin

Your welcome :)
