Gregor is documenting the height of pea plants each week. He has determined the function to be f(x) = 2x + 1. Based on the situation above, describe any necessary restrictions to the domain and range. Provide justification for the restrictions.
I am not sure I even get the question right but here goes. Restrictions mean that some values cannot be in the domain and range. For example, if you are measuring the height of men, you cannot have female heights in the domain. Range is, the way I understand it easier, is the f(x). To answer this question, think of what you should not have as x. What values can pea plants absolutely not have? For range, you have to answer based on your domain. If you say x cannot be 2, then the range cannot have 2(2) + 1. Be sure to confirm this with someone else first. I may be way off.
Yeah I think that's all there to it. If you want to specifically find the restrictions, then there is a way to do it.
@Nurialozza96
Kind of confused still guys.. but thankyou for trying !! appreciate it
There is not enough data to answer the question. You provided examples but none of these can help answer your question. Is this a lab report? Statistic question? or just a wording question?
Its a question on a unit test I have. I know its very confusing but they are asking for an answer and i have NO clue @Osako
@Osako There is enough data. What we should do is think mathematically, that is focus on that function itself and forget every other thing for a short while.
@Nurialozza96 Have you learned how to find domain and range of a function from your mathematics classes?
Yes. but thats not what they are asking @Isaiah.Feynman
Ok you will have to apply what you have been taught to this problem. Like an applied mathematician. Lol.
If the question is based on math 2x+1 then there is no restriction because the domain and range are all real number. Although in a real world question it would have to be infinity and -infinity because peas plants can't grow forever they have a limit on their growth based on their parenting genes.
thanks guys ! appreciate it
OK, I think I finally understand, I missed read the question earlier, due to the fact it is 2x+1 based on pea plants the restriction on these range and domain would have to be negative infinity on the domain and the range because the pea plants can't grow backwards. It can going infinity for range and domain.
Actually, I thought we are looking for values of x that would make the equation equal to zero. @Osako
Now that Osako mentioned it, the range cannot be less than 0. Therefore x(domain) cannot be anything that would make f(x) less than 0
I see it now.
