OK, well, is it in context or just a line like that? And what could people not have been aware of before? Hmmm. As a person, something would have to change for me or in front of me. As a people, well, the world changes all the time as things are invented.

I did a Google search on the phrase and it really put in context. Seems there as a country where they did not have TV. This was a statement made right after they got TVs.
It's like food....You know how there are times that you crave something but you just don't know what it is until later after you've eaten something else
