For the whites, they didn't have plantation workers.. so they had to pay people money to work or their crops would die. and for blacks, they had no where to go so some would stay with their previous "owner" and they would give them some land and pay them for their work. It was hard for African Americans to get a job because people were still racist even when they weren't slaves.
