The moral of the story is about wits. Consider how Keesh killed the bears - the hunters in the tribe were right, he couldn't hunt. But he was still able to outsmart the bears and kill them. What can you say about that situation that teaches a lesson?

Also, I'm pretty sure London got that nickname simply because he wrote so many books about wolves and dogs, so his friends called him that as a joke.
