write 0.00014 in scientific notation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.4*10^-4

OpenStudy (ray10):

to get the scientific notation, you must look firstly at the amount of zeroes you are changing it from, in this question there are three after the decimal point. so if you move the decimal point till you arrive between the 1 and 4 \[0.00014=00001.4\] you have moved four decimal places, so the answer is now \[1.4 \times 10^{-4}\] as \[10^{-4}\] brings the decimal point back four places

note as well, when you move the decimal point frm a n# less than zero to make the n# more than zero then the power will be ngative and vice versa
