Because Britain declared war on France on March 17, 1778.

French and Britain were obviously enenmies

Britain declared a war on France typically because of the Treaty of Alliance (1778) France made with the colonies
OpenStudy (zale101):
but before that, France got beaten by Britain in the french Indian war which i think made France hold a grudge against Britain
