I'm not sure what choices were offered for this question, but the protests at Tiananmen Square in '89 first started out as mourning for a government reformer which soon spiraled into a student-led protest for government reform. It actually split the leadership -- some wanted to listen to the protestors and negotiate with them, others wanted to crush it. Eventually, the hardliners won and brutally suppressed the protests using military force under the pretense that it was "counterrevolutionary" which is essentially the death sentence to any political thought or action believed to go against the Party.
