Does the odometer of a car measure a scalar or a vector quantity? What about the speedometer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ganeshie8

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

odometer measures what ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

distance and speedometer measures speed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would odometer be vector and speedometer be scalar?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

cool :) is distance a scalar quantity or vector ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you're half right :|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

distance and magnitude are vectors

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont understand what scalar is

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

cuz, we can refer them just by saying a number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait direction and magnitude are vectors

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

here is the thing :- distance and speed are scalars displacement and velocity are vectors

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

a scalar can be specified just by refering to a number / magnitude but a vector requires direction also to fully represent ..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so they are both scalars?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Correct ! both distance and speed are scalars so, both odometer and speedometer measure scalar quantities !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh okay thank you =D

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

np :D
