What does it mean when scientists say that living organisms share a universal genetic code?

OpenStudy (zale101):

well, all living organisms have four bases in their genes and have all the bases of DNA in every cell in them, the bases consist of thymine and adenine together and guanine and cytosine together.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would that be the answer?? @Zale101

OpenStudy (zale101):

yeah, and because of that all living organisms have a shared ancestor based off of similar genetic code in DNA

thanks so much @Zale101
